Inducting an employee properly is essential if you want them to settle into their role quickly, feeling like a valued part of the team and reinforcing they made the right decision to join your company.

Having spent time, and money, hiring the perfect person to fill your vacancy it’s important you get them off to a good start and live up to their expectations. A good induction ensures workplace safety and has a positive impact on employee retention and increased workplace happiness and productivity.

The best inductions are well planned and structured in such a way that the new entrant is learning at their own pace and not overloaded too much. Depending on your business it could take a day, a week or maybe longer and can be delivered in a number of ways - one to one training, some reading/research, shadowing other team members or time to watch film/web content amongst other things. At the most basic level, a good induction is the best way to orientate your new staff member on the way you work and how they fit in.

On the first day, your employee should have received a contract and relevant documentation relating to their employment.  "Day One" is a good time to go through this information so that they understand their obligations and your expectations in terms of phoning in sick, requesting holiday, working hours, parking, health and safety, the line of reporting etc. There should also be a tour of the facilities and introductions to other members of staff.

It might sound obvious but it’s also important to make sure they have a desk/computer/phone, access to systems, email address, stationary and anything else they might need to be able to do their job!

Encourage them to take their own notes and provide them with copies of any documents or manuals they might need.

Being inducted is tiring with so much to take in, many companies offer a later start each day or an early finish.
